Vula - Voice of Basement Jaxx

Vula, lead vocalist for Basement Jaxx and voice/co-writer of top ten hit ‘Oh My Gosh’, has launched her solo career with her unique ‘electric-soul’ sound, a stunning blend of nu-soul and dance; and her own record label DivaGeek with producer Ben Jones.

The DivaGeek label is set to release Vula’s hot new single ‘Money’, with mixes from Soulshaker and the ever current Agent X plus more download release in summer 2009, followed by her debut album. Says Vula: "Money is about one girl's dream of getting what she wants and what she'd do with it!”

Vula and her über-talented live band have been on tour across the UK in winter 08/09 to promote the new single, playing to appreciative crowds in Brighton, Southampton, Notting Hill, Nottingham, Bristol, and numerous London venues.

Vula’s first solo gig outside the UK was held in Lithuania on 31st January ’09 to a packed house, and she supported Musiq Soulchild at Manchester Academy and Indigo O2 Arena in March 2009. Memorable gigs in 2008 included headlining the ‘BBC Introducing’ stage live on radio and TV at Glastonbury festival, and playing several dates at renowned London venues the Jazz Café and Ronnie Scott’s.

In 2008 Vula toured the UK, Australia, and Moscow with one of 2008’s foremost singer-songwriters Sam Sparro: singing backing vocals and performing ‘Money’ with Sparro as a duet. Sam’s praise of ‘Money’: "I can't stop singing it, I want this song for me!" speaks for itself. Vula and her band supported Sparro at the Soundtribe Live Global Angels Charity Concert at Shoreditch House on 24th November 2008, to a packed crowd including Kate Moss, who danced with her friends to the entire set.

In 2009, she sang support vocals for Dizzee Rascal on his 2009 album Tongue N' Cheek, and has supported him on live appearances, including Live Lounge, Later... with Jools Holland and the 2009 BBC Electric Proms.

"Better Days", the title song of Incognito's 2016 album In Search of Better Days, features Malinga as lead singer.

In 2019, she collaborated as featured artist with English DJ Riton and Dutch producer Oliver Heldens on the song "Turn Me On", which interpolates "Doctor Love" by First Choice and "Don't Go" by Yazoo.

Vula performed live at Trevor Nelson's Soul Christmas at the Royal Albert Hall in 2019.[4]

She is currently performing with The Horne Section on BBC's Crouchy's Year Late Euros.[citation needed]

Vula was a backing singer for Paul Weller when he performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at The Barbican on 15 May 2021
