Personality alongside instant impact coupled with skill, know-how and swagger; these are the key components that make up leading popular British radio DJ and presenter Seani B.
Born in London, Seani has taken the cosmopolitan surrounding he grew up in and incorporated them into his unique musical blend. from Dancehall to Hip Hop, R&B to House and even Soca to Rock; if it is musical, Seani will be all over it.
Seani began DJing as a youngster in the late 80's with his older brothers in the popular sound system, Limited Edition. As well as DJing, his expertise and keen ear for music was shown in shifts at local record shops in West London where he experimented with his mixing skills.
During this time, Seani B started to hone his broadcasting skills on a local community station, Star FM where he played strictly hip-hop.
In 1994 he amalgamated his technical skills and his knowledge of crowd pleasing and released a bootleg dancehall reggae remix of the Case and Foxy Brown classic track "Touch Me, Tease Me". The track was an instant global success and immediately saw Kiss FM call upon his services as an in house remixer, creating bespoke mixes for reggae DJ David Rodigan.
It was long before the "Seani B" treatment was being given to a number of tracks, and his mixes, which consisted of dance hall beats combined with RnB and Hip hop vocals, were heavily requested by listeners on Kiss throughout the day. Demand grew for his unique sound which prompted him to set up his own production company, Big League Productions.
Before long, some of the world's biggest artists were feeling the "remix kid" touch. The likes of Lauryn Hill, Pras, Sugababes, Beverley Knight, Shaggy and Rayvon all came knocking for official mixes, and Seani didn't disappoint.
The "Big League" record label was next to follow, and his first dancehall riddim entitled "Spanish Fly" featured collaborations with the Dancehall "A" list - Vybz Kartel, Sizzla, TOK & Beenie Man.
The most popular version of the track was by UK artist Tubby T, entitled "Ready She Ready", and received airplay across the board, proving to be a UK smash.
2002 was a pivotal year for Seani. The BBC had been granted a digital licence for a new nationwide black music radio station, 1Xtra, and station bosses did all they could to persuade Seani to join up. He did, and what followed was a crucial turning point for the network and their new DJ. The show that was created was "Seani B's Mixtape", which went against the grain of conventional single genre music programming at the time - this was a musical mash up at it's finest - all forms of black music, seamlessly blended into a 2 hour mix - no playlists, no dud tracks, just a 2 hour party on the radio.
The presentation side of Seani's development also flourished. He had been selected to head up important station wide initiatives such as Notting Hill Carnival and Outside Broadcasts in Jamaica.
In 2009 Radio 1 came calling. Europe's largest youth network had recognised the impact Seani's shows were having and gave him his own 2 hour weekly show on a Saturday night, with the brief of "ensuring the party continued across the UK". He completed a stella Saturday night line up which included Trevor Nelson, Tim Westwood, Mistajam, Fabio & Groovrider & Ras Kwame. The audience doubled in less than a year but due to a different direction by 1Xtra the show is no longer.
After a short stint of not being on air Seani is back controlling the airwaves on a Saturday night again. Saturday Nights/Sunday Morning 5am – 7am is where you ca find him weekly mixing up a storm. He also back in the studio working with the likes of Cecile, Gappy Ranx, Bay C from TOK, Anthony B, Tony Matterhorn to name a few. Also the likes of Tulisa, Josh Osho & Wretch 32 have come knocking for the remix kid touch.
His work on the live circuit should not go unmentioned. A much-in-demand DJ, Seani doesn't have a "stock" set, instead he has the ability to judge a crowd, know what they want, and deliver it on the spot…..no prep required!!!! Seani is not just a DJ, he is a host/Entertainer. This is proven every time he hits a club leaving the ravers wanting more even with all the energy lets off.
His bookings take him all over the globe - from Freshers events in Newcastle, to dancehall soundclashes in New York.
Seani B possesses the very rare commodities of genuine skill, ability and talent - his bubbly personality compliments his incredible prowess on the decks and his star is definitely in the ascendancy.
